So why are they $25 on our kickstarter? Well, kickstarter takes their cut, plus the credit card processing fees means we lose about 10% right off the top. Our goal with this badge has always been to sell them for $20. They'll probably be a little cheaper at DEFCON. Will the badges be the same cost at DEFCON? We think they're awesome and everyone will want one, but we're biased :) We don't want to get into a situation where we made way too many, and not enough people want them. If these badges are so cheap, why are you doing a kickstarter? We recently started a small company, MK Factor so that we have a brand to associate with our projects. Together we earned a Black Badge for car hacking at DEFCON 24. Michael Whiteley ( and Katie Whiteley ( a husband/wife team who make awesome stuff.

All board files and code will be made available after DEFCON. We're only making 20, so get them while you can! We also have a Limited Edition RED screwdriver. Normal mode: triggers Goon Box LED, normal screwdriver sound with adjustable frequencyĪll badges will come with an awesome sticker, and kickstarter backers will get a special lanyard that won't be available at DEFCON. Screwdriver Modes (There's still no setting for wood, sorry): There is a touch button near the tip that changes modes, and a slider to adjust the frequency of the sonic.

It has beautiful blue soldermask, gold accents, lots of LEDs, a piezo element for sound, and an infrared LED in the tip for triggering the Goon Box. The screwdriver is a custom take on that classic sonic tool used by the Galifreyans. Any screwdriver can trigger any Goon Box, so if you see your badge lighting up, be on the lookout for fellow Whovians! There isn't any sound on the pin because it can be triggered by other screwdrivers. Since it uses a standard IR receiver, it also doubles as a remote control tester. It responds to commands from the screwdriver and makes the LED on top pulse. It has a pin on the back to attach it to your shirt or lanyard. The Goon Box has that familiar look with a red theme and a red LED on the top. That's why we created this awesome badge that almost anyone at DEFCON can afford. Does it have WiFi/Bluetooth? No, but it does have LEDs, sound, touch sensors, infrared, and it's a two-part badge! Functionality: The only thing we don't like about them is the price. We love all the unofficial badges that have become such a hit at DEFCON. Why Goon Box? Well, the Goons are kind of the police of DEFCON, and we want to steer clear of trademarks. To that end, we've created the Goon Box badge.

We're huge fans of that TV show about time travelers in blue boxes.
